No one tries to be an individual in the abstract; each person’s own sense of individuality, along with one’s sense of self and self-worth, is precious and irreplaceable. Bioethics need not deny these matters, but neuroethics has an extra responsibility toward these capacities.

John Shook is associate professor of philosophy at Bowie State University. He also teaches in the graduate Liberal Studies program at Georgetown University. He studies science and naturalism; pragmatism; and intersections of technology, ethics and policy, and has written more than 20 books and 100 journal articles and chapters.
