There are 101 days between us and the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means Mel Gray's 101-yard kick return touchdown is the Saints Play of the Day. Gray stunned the San Francisco 49ers with a much-needed score to start the second half, giving the Saints a narrow lead at old Candlestick Park (which you can see here). Gray took the kick out of the end zone and worked his way through traffic, somehow keeping his feet before slipping out at midfield.

There are 102 days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season -- that means this 102-yard kick return touchdown by Eric Guliford back in 1997 is our Saints Play of the Day in the countdown. Guliford gave the Saints some life late in the second quarter, answering a 30-yard touchdown pass from Rams quarterback Tony Banks to wide receiver Torrance Small with a score of his own, which you can see here.

• NFL owners are discussing the “integrity” of the salary cap system and its potential impact on rising franchise costs. • The New Orleans Saints have been pioneers in using “void years” to manipulate the salary cap, a practice now under scrutiny. • A potential ban on void years could significantly impact the Saints' salary cap management strategies. Could one of the New Orleans Saints' most important tools go the way of the dinosaur?

Let's start with the good news. On Wednesday, fan-favorite former New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead announced that he's found a new home for 2025 after being released by the New York Jets. The sole remaining active player from the Super Bowl XLIV-winning team has spent time with the Jets, Miami Dolphins, and (briefly) the Atlanta Falcons after being released by the Saints a few years ago. Now the bad news.

So just who is going to play quarterback for the New Orleans Saints this year? Derek Carr is retiring and Jake Haener is going to miss the summer recovering from an oblique muscle injury, so the likeliest answer is either Spencer Rattler or rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough. And if Aaron Rodgers has anything to say about it (and he does), it won't be him. While fielding questions from the crowd before a concert in Texas, Rodgers was asked by a fan if he'd consider signing with the Saints.

Per Over The Cap, Saints are in the red by $42.7M next year. Carr's retirement will lower his cap hit from $69.2M to $39.2M, leaving them at $12.7M over the spending limit. I'm guessing they'll have enough unspent cap space this year to roll over and cover that.

Saints will save $30M in cash this year and eventually close to $30M in cap space with Derek Carr’s retirement. But almost all cap savings will wait until 2026. For now, Carr’s $1.255M salary will come off books June 2 (but be replaced by a different minimum salary in top 51) …
