No-one should be too surprised but the Autumn Budget has confirmed that local government reorganisation is happening, with a probable focus on ending the remaining two-tier structures and on smaller unitary authorities.

The new government should revisit lessons from the previous Labour administration's Total Place pilots, writes the chief executive of Leicestershire CC. Comparisons between the circumstances and outcomes of the 1997 and 2024 general elections are understandable. Whilst commentators look at personalities, politics and societal impacts, those of us who were around in 1997 can add a local government perspective. Recollections may offer some food for thought for the present.

External review failed to identify councils whose failures damaged sector’s reputation, writes the chief executive of Leicestershire CC. In a joint article with Rob Whiteman in January I pointed to the importance of good governance in every local authority when difficult financial decisions have to be made.

The flame for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been lit in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics. The flame will now begin its journey in a relay to light the cauldron that will mark the opening for the Summer Games in July. Dignitaries and members of the public gathered in the stadium, where the earliest recorded Games were held in 776 BC, to witness the lighting of the flame.

Shohei Ohtani’s Los Angeles Dodgers brought Major League Baseball (MLB) to South Korea on Wednesday night, overshadowing Seoul hometown star Kim Ha-seong’s San Diego Padres in a 5-2 victory. The first clash of the two-game Seoul Series opened the MLB season and showcased an international appeal brought to the sport by an increasing lineup of Asian stars led by two-way Japanese star Ohtani, who joined the Dodgers in the offseason, signing the richest deal ever made by a major leaguer.
