After nearly two months of hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the two sides have agreed a 60-day ceasefire, allowing many of the civilians who have been forced to flee the fighting in south Lebanon to return to their homes. The terms of the deal are very similar to the situation after Israel and Hezbollah last came seriously to blows in 2006. Israeli troops are to withdraw back across the border into their own country.

When Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, on November 5, he was settling accounts with the only well-qualified and experienced member of his cabinet. The war is still being fought on many fronts and Israel is preparing istelf for Iran’s long announced next assault. But Netanyahu chose to dispense with a defence minister with a distinguished military career. His replacement, Israel Katz, is a nonentity who has no serious military experience.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, travelled to Washington this week for a series of high-level meetings. At the invitation of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, he addressed a joint session of the US Congress. More than 90 Democratic Party politicians did not attend, including the vice-president – and likely Democratic Party presidential nominee – Kamala Harris, who would normally preside over the session, but pleaded a prior engagement.
