However, estuaries are severely perturbed by anthropogenic activities (1–3). For example, excess nutrient inputs from agriculture and wastewater cause eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and hypoxia (4, 5).

Jane Beaufore August 19, 2024 In 2014, astrophysicists caught a glimpse of what they thought was their white whale: evidence of the nature of the mysterious and elusive dark matter that makes up 85 percent of the universe’s material. They spotted X-ray activity thought to result from decaying dark matter, as typical matter would not have been able to produce such a signal. With this exciting discovery, a window seemed to have finally opened into dark matter’s secrets.

New observations of a gas planet orbiting a distant star are helping astronomers figure out how some of the universe’s hottest planets came to be. Using a telescope at the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Kitt Peak National Observatory, astronomers discovered the extreme orbit of an exoplanet that’s on its way to becoming a ‘hot Jupiter’ — a giant planet orbiting so close to its star that its surface temperatures can reach thousands of degrees.
