For the third year running, the Strathmore Fire Department and Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) are engaging in a friendly competition to raise donations for the Wheatland County Food Bank. Similar to the previous two years, the Strathmore Fire Department issued the challenge to the school. Over the course of the allotted time, students could bring in any donations to the school, while the fire department distributed donation bags throughout the local community.

CANMORE – Canmore will soon have a municipal governance committee following changes to provincial legislation. Canmore council approved the creation of the committee at its Feb. 4 meeting. It will be formally established and members selected at council’s annual organizational meeting in October. The committee won’t have authority over operational direction, but serves as an opportunity to provide feedback in setting priorities and performance goals in the community.

Golden Hills School Division has announced Corina Hampson as the new Associate Superintendent of Learning Services beginning in August. “I am excited to start the new position and support our teachers and support our students, meet their educational goals and continue to offer our diverse programming through the lens of powerful learning,” she said. Hampson began working with Golden Hills School Division as a teacher, serving at Brentwood Elementary School, and at Westmount Elementary School.

The Strathmore Legion hosted an awards ceremony, Jan. 25, for students who participated in their annual youth remembrance program. Students who were to be awarded for their entries were invited to the ceremony at the Legion building. Strathmore RCMP Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz reflected on 2024 and reported significant drops to criminal code offences over the course of the calendar year. “As far as 2024 is concerned, generally across the board, we look at our municipal crime stats, being in the Town of Strathmore and our rural crime stats … we saw our greatest reductions in, across the board essentially, for the Town of Strathmore last year,” he said.

Town of Strathmore council passed all three readings for Bylaw 25-01, being the 2025 Operating Expenditures Line of Credit Borrowing Bylaw, during the Jan. 22 regular meeting. This bylaw was recommended by town administration to be passed as a contingency approach to support the town’s existing line of credit. The action required the passing of a bylaw in order to be in compliance with the Municipal Government Act.
