In July 1993, my wife, Marlene, and I began Fourth of July butterfly counts (4JC) in north-central Minnesota. Since 1995, we’ve held six counts per summer. These now include Nevis, Deep Portage, Itasca State Park, Bemidji, central Polk County and Bluestem in Clay County. 2024 marks our 32nd season that totals 185 counts. Over those three decades, exactly 241,048 butterflies have been tallied. Each count has an established, 15-mile-diameter circle.
