I moved to Ridgefield in 1970. The population of the town was 18,000. The fire and police departments' capability at that time appeared to be more than adequate to address any circumstance called for. By the year 2000, the population had grown to 23,700. A thirty percent increase in thirty years. In that time span, both departments had elevated their equipment, manpower, and facilities to accommodate the growth. I felt pretty secure that all the first responder needs in this town could be met.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at age 100, a beloved figure for many on the evangelical and secular left. I wish Carter’s family comfort as they grieve, and I think Carter can be lauded for his humanitarian efforts, his efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East, and for what I take was his sincere (if liberal) faith. But some of the retrospectives in the Christian community have bordered on hagiography.

Some critics seem intent on taking down Basham’s book at all costs. Whether the book is truly inaccurate seems a secondary matter for them. They just want to stop others from reading it…It is hard to ignore the feeling that much of the brouhaha raised against Basham’s book reflects insecurity and even fear. If you want to better understand what’s going on inside American evangelicalism’s elite, Shepherds for Sale (2024) by Megan Basham is a great place to start.

Forty years ago on May 15, evangelical Christian thinker Francis Schaeffer died after a long battle against cancer. He went out with a bang, not a whimper. A few months before his passing, Schaeffer published his final book, The Great Evangelical Disaster. Many of his last weeks were spent promoting its message.

To the Editor: I moved to Ridgefield and found a small house close to town, on a quiet street. The neighborhood’s development seemed sound and complete. Sure, a neighbor might add on an addition, or maybe subdivide (if there is enough land), or even put in a pool. I felt reasonably secure the air of the neighborhood would not drastically change. Then, wham/bam, there’s a 14-unit apartment building constructed on a half acre next door.
