I moved to Ridgefield in 1970. The population of the town was 18,000. The fire and police departments' capability at that time appeared to be more than adequate to address any circumstance called for. By the year 2000, the population had grown to 23,700. A thirty percent increase in thirty years. In that time span, both departments had elevated their equipment, manpower, and facilities to accommodate the growth. I felt pretty secure that all the first responder needs in this town could be met.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at age 100, a beloved figure for many on the evangelical and secular left. I wish Carter’s family comfort as they grieve, and I think Carter can be lauded for his humanitarian efforts, his efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East, and for what I take was his sincere (if liberal) faith. But some of the retrospectives in the Christian community have bordered on hagiography.
