On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, Manitoba and the world lost a human gift, Minister of Education Nello Altomare, who left us far too soon. We would all do well to live our lives as he did — with humility, generosity, caring, sacrifice and courage. I first met Nello when he was a student in a summer educational leadership class a colleague and I were teaching in the early ’90s in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba.

I sincerely wish Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would graciously step aside and make room for someone else to serve in the prime minister’s position and as leader of the Liberal party. However, if he does not, I will vote for the Liberal party again because the alternatives are not appealing. I will vote on their record despite its many shortcomings. I will vote for their platform, unless they do a reversal, on the issues I think we Canadians should care about.

When superintendent Matt Henderson publicly raised a concern about school fundraising and announced that the Winnipeg School Division was initiating a pause, he opened up a necessary but controversial conversation with the usual reactions. Our views on fundraising reveal our deeply held views about funding schools, societal aspirations, parental responsibilities, and educating our youth for democratic citizenship.
