For decades, spring has brought excitement for Patsy Hopper. Placing orders for new plants, like strawberries and raspberries, and dreaming about the bounties her 40-acre farm just south of Urbana, Illinois, will bring as the summer comes along. This year, she keeps making out the order forms to nurseries, but she can't bring herself to send them in. "It's useless," Patsy said this week. Like many retired Central Illinois residents, Patsy headed to Florida to escape the cold for a while.

The Illinois basketball fanbase is unhinged. We all know this. I generally do everything I can to avoid listening to the Fasteners Etc Altorfer Cat Postgame Show. I’m not in any of the chatrooms or message boards. I listen with deep admiration when 70-year-radio veteran Loren Tate calms people down or just generally dismisses them (“Well I don’t know about all that”) on Monday Morning Quarterbacks or Saturday Sports Talk.

I started mowing my parents’ lawn when I was 8 years old. We had a very large riding lawn mower, and I would get on it and spend hours driving around the yard. At first, my main instruction was to not really get near anything. My dad would have me leave a few rows around each of the trees so I didn’t accidentally run into them (though I sometimes still did).

Johnathan Hettinger December 25, 2024 Editor’s Note: This article contains spoilers. I remember my first conversation about Yellowstone, the wildly popular western TV show that just wrapped up its fifth and final season earlier this month. This was 2018, and I was sitting in the middle of the dirt street outside the Mint Bar in Livingston, Montana.

By Johnathan HettingerI moved home to Central Illinois six months ago today. I was motivated by a number of things, but largely by a desire to make this a better place. I had been living in Montana, just outside Yellowstone National Park, for the last six years. I loved it. I loved the access to nature. I loved the rivers. I loved the wildlife. I loved my friends. I loved it all.

Finally, some good Illini news.

My new single “Honky Tonk At Home” just dropped last night! It’s available on all music streaming platforms! Give it a listen and let me know what you think! 🤠 https://t.co/OpSLoxQA7P

Kirkwood wins 55-54. Parkland is NJCAA runner-up.

Williams fouls Kirkwood’s Traijan Saun with 1.5 seconds left. He makes one free throw to put Kirkwood up 55-54. Parkland has the ball with 1.2 seconds left.

Mary Henson gets a standing ovation at halftime. Trent Sherfield (Danville native who plays for the Denver Broncos) also gets a standing ovation for pulling out the 50/50 winning ticket.

Parkland down 29-24 at the half. The main problem is they’re fouling too much. Champaign’s JaMonte Williams leading the way with 9 points. https://t.co/LSPbEhUvBY
