AbstractStomoxys flies are widely distributed and economically significant vectors of various livestock pathogens of veterinary importance. However, the role of Stomoxys spp. in pathogen transmission is poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the feeding patterns of these blood feeders collected from specific locations in Kenya, to identify various vertebrate hosts they fed on, and the livestock hemopathogens they carried, to elucidate their role in pathogens transmission.

The study was conducted in six different districts in the South Kivu province located in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Fizi, Kabare, Kalehe, Mwenga, Uvira, and Walungu. The collection points in each district are shown in Fig. 1. This vast region has an area of 66.814 Km2, located between longitudes 26° 10’ 30” and 29° 58’ East and latitudes 00’ 58” North and 4° 51’ 21” South.

A cross sectional study design was applied in the study with multistage sampling method to select a single sub-county in each of the study counties. Smear positive tuberculosis patients above 18 years who had resided in the study area for at least 6 months were eligible for enrolment with only those who consented to the study recruited. Tuberculosis-HIV coinfected and non-coinfected were proportionately recruited based TB-HIV coinfection prevalence in each county as reported by Ministry of Health.

This paper has been developed in accordance to the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials (i.e., SPIRIT) reporting guidelines [36] (Table 1). The “Peer PrEP” trial is a 2-arm hybrid effectiveness-implementation cluster-randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04982250). The trial will occur in Central Kenya (Kiambu, Nairobi, and Murang’a counties), which has largely peri-urban and rural populations and a population-level HIV prevalence of ~ 4% [37].
