An Essex Police officer who used unlawful and excessive force on a vulnerable man, who was not resisting arrest, has walked free from court after being convicted of assault. PC Glen Calvert, 53, and attached to the force’s response unit, was today (April 17 2025) found guilty of assault by beating following a trial at Colchester Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to 18 weeks' imprisonment, but it was suspended for 18 months.

A man who was stopped at Heathrow Airport with £1m in two suitcases has admitted money laundering following a National Crime Agency investigation. Mazen Al Shaar, 48, was stopped by Border Force officers on Saturday 15 March this year as he was about to fly from Terminal Three to Beirut. Al Shaar, of Marsworth Close, Middlesex, said he only had £500 in cash on him and that he was leaving the UK to visit family. But officers searched his three suitcases and two of them contained the huge cash haul.

POLICE officers are urgently appealing for the public’s help to locate a man who has absconded from a mental health facility and is believed to pose a risk to the public. Vasile Coceban, who is 36, was reported missing by staff at the Park Royal Centre for Mental Health in Acton Lane, Brent at 10:32am on Wednesday. He is described as white, 5 ft 4 inches tall, of average build with brown hair. Officers have released still images showing Vasile on the morning he went missing.

A murder probe has been launched following death of a 21-year-old man who was stabbed yesterday, Monday, April 14. Police were called at 9:16pm to Hillingdon Street, Walworth, south-east London, after reports of a stabbing. Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service who treated a 21-year-old man for stab injuries. Sadly, despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are on-going to locate his next of kin.
