The Academy music branch has expanded its Oscar original-score shortlist from 15 to 20 films this year, widening the field of potential nominees in a year of varied approaches and soundscapes. Composer Kris Bowers already has an Oscar, but it’s not for music; it’s for producing the 2023 documentary short subject “The Last Repair Shop.” His best shot yet for music awards is “The Wild Robot,” about a machine that becomes mother to an orphaned gosling on an island without human inhabitants.

LACO executive director Ben Cadwallader announced the gift at a private event Sunday at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Beverly Hills attended by LACO executives, music director Jaime Martín, and members of the L.A. music community.

In the absence of a phenomenon like “Barbenheimer,” which dominated the Grammys’ visual-media categories last year, the outlook for 2025 is considerably more complicated and, some might say, more interesting. Look for the summer’s biggest movie hits, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” to land spots in the score and compilation soundtrack categories when the Grammy nominees are announced Nov. 8.
