United owner Tom Piatak, left, with chief executive Nigel Clibbens, is expected to publish a "summary" of the club's internal review rather than a "blow by blow" account (Image: Ben Holmes) Carlisle United will not provide a “blow by blow” account of the club’s internal review after relegation to non-league. The Blues face a total round trip of 10,629 miles to fulfil their 23 away games in 2025/26 – their most for eight years. The relegated Cumbrians’ commitments on the road for 2025/26 were confirmed after Sunday’s National League play-off final. And Southend United’s defeat at the hands of Oldham Athletic added another long trip to a calendar which sees a host of other big journeys for the Cumbrians.

Oldham clinched a return to the EFL at Wembley by coming from behind twice to win 3-2. The Essex club's defeat completes the National League line-up for the 2025/26 season.

Yes, Carlisle have already tried spending boldly before under the Piataks, and it has, to date, backfired spectacularly. That doesn't, though, mean the general strategy has been wrong. Only the club’s aim. It certainly does not mean they should stop flexing their financial muscles.
