The 2025 Bass Magazine Awards is in the books and it was truly a historic night of bass. Taking place at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California, the show kicked off at 7:00 PM with a solo performance by Nashville singer-songwriter/upright bass phenom Scott Mulvahill, who appeared throughout the evening. Bass Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jon D’Auria, Senior Editor Chris Jisi, and Editor-at-Large Elton Bradman took the stage to launch the awards segment.

Prolific New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr., will be releasing a brand new instrumental album entitled Porter’s Pocket with his longstanding quartet the Runnin’ Pardners available via Color Red on February 7, 2025. Porter Jr is joined by his longtime collaborator keyboardist Michael Lemmler (Jubilation, TriFunctA), drummer Terrence Houston (The Funky Meters, Toubab Krewe), and newest member Chris Adkins (Raphael Saadiq, Mark Broussard) on guitar.

What a year in the Berklee Bass Dept! As you will see in the video, so many great visiting artists, students, faculty, and administration. Just a reminder on our “process”. During each residency, at the end, I usually bring the artist into my office to record for no more than 10-15 minutes, to a predefined tempo. They are not playing with any other track than the drum loop. I may call out keys or “concepts”, but they are free to play whatever they feel. We also try to capture video of these sessions.
