Vancouver firm CO280 has struck what it claims is a “historic” 12-year deal with Microsoft to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from an American paper mill. The company and its technology partner SLB Capturi plan to sell almost 3.7 million tonnes of CO2 removal to Microsoft. The project will be designed to capture biogenic (biological origin) emissions from boiler stacks by retrofitting them with capture equipment and storing the CO2 permanently in geological formations.

Credit: Jon Fingas The mid-tier smartphone space is hot as of spring 2025. Apple has launched the iPhone 16e, a long-due (if pricier) revamp of its most affordable model. Samsung’s Galaxy A56 is a welcome redesign with a dash of AI. The OnePlus 13R is speedy for the money. And then there’s Nothing, whose premium Phone 3a Pro puts the relative newcomer into more direct contention. However, I’ve had an opportunity to review the Google Pixel 9a—and it tops the rest, at least in the US and Canada.

Credit: Jon Fingas Spec-wise, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra is a winner. It has a blazing-fast custom Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, an even larger take on the S24 Ultra’s low-glare display, and a more robust camera system with 48-megapixel ultra-wide shots. One UI 7 is welcome, too, with a fresh overall look as well as genuinely useful feature upgrades whether or not you care for Galaxy AI.

I reviewed the @GooglePixel_US Pixel 9a. It's honestly my favorite midrange smartphone right now. Superb cameras, gobs of battery life, and performance that's just right. Better than the iPhone 16e for many people. #technology https://t.co/MFwcWnfSD0

I've used the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra for weeks. It's technically a powerhouse... but also begging for a revamp. #android #mobile https://t.co/p3G2OKnGyp

Nintendo Switch 2 take: $449 is steep, and there won't be many exclusive games at launch... but the hardware is a big upgrade, and there will be plenty of games that just weren't options before. #Switch2 https://t.co/MlcKeiu0Hq
