People often ask “Where is West England?” The problem is that when carving up England there are so many preconceptions and associations that everyone’s view is different. Bylines RegionsThe Bylines Network was set up in 2020 with Yorkshire Bylines and the North East Bylines leading the way. Next up was our region of Gloucestershire and surrounding counties. We toyed with the idea of using the name ‘West Country Bylines’.

Bob was a valued contributor to West England Bylines and will be sorely missed. Our sympathy goes out to Bob’s family and friends. Bob wrote with conviction about the need to reform our electoral system. Initially he pointed out the flaws in the First Past The Post (FPTP) system and proposed some kind of Proportional Representation (PR) to replace it. He also highlighted the impossibility under FPTP of an elected MP actually representing the majority of his constituents.

High court had ruled government was not meeting legal duty to clean up Costa Beck near Pickering. The UK environment secretary, Steve Reed, … will argue on Tuesday in the court of appeal that cleaning up individual rivers and streams devastated by pollution is administratively unworkable. Ed: How can cleaning up individual rivers be “administratively unworkable”?

The whole transport sector is the largest source of carbon emissions in the UK. Since this adds to the UK contribution to the climate emergency, the sector needs targeting with a wide variety of measures to cut emissions. The academic literature on adaptation to climate change offers extensive references to threats to transport infrastructure and to the need for more coastal and estuarial protection.

The 34 seats in the West England area have produced large-scale changes with both Labour and LibDems taking many seats from the Conservatives. Greens won their first seat in the area (Bristol Central). Labour are on 16 seats with 10 gains and six holds. LibDems now have 13 seats adding 11 gains to the two already held. Conservatives now reduced to four seats having lost 21. Several constituencies have ceased to be conservative-held for the first time in over a century.

The new River Coln Trail will be launched on Saturday, 23rd March 2024 10.15am – 12noon at Fairford Community Centre, High St. Fairford, GL7 4AF (next to the church) All are welcome. The trail runs from the source of the River Coln, near Winchcombe, to its meeting with the River Thames, at Inglesham, near Lechlade. The total length of the walk is 33 miles but it can be done in sections, as nine separate circular walks.

Rishi Sunak has capitulated to his fossil fuel cronies and gone back on the promises he made for UK to achieve net zero by 2050. The deadline for phasing out petrol and diesel cars has been shifted by five years from 2030 to 2035. Replacement of home gas boilers by heat pumps is not now mandatory until the boilers actually give out. This was met by derision and dismay from environmentalists and industry alike. The environmentalists see it as an abrogation of responsibility.

Ubiquitously throughout our culture is the message “vote, vote, vote to preserve our democracy.” Why cannot some credible cultural institutions emphasize that your vote will be more informed if you first vet or exhibit critical thinking and hear the most informed, especially contrarian position(s), before voting? And I don’t just mean voting in elections. If you have political or moral positions expressed to any interlocutors, family, social gatherings, etc., then do the same thing.
