The Prime Minister’s broken promise on tax cuts has prompted speculation about other possible tax promises that the government may be considering breaking. A perennial topic in that space is the belief that super is very lightly taxed and is therefore a prime candidate for special attention. This is because super in the accumulation stage is only taxed at 15 per cent and investment earnings inside super funds in retirement are tax free.

There’s more bad news for homeowners. Interest rates are up again, with promises of more to come as central banks around the world play follow the leader. The effect on inflation is anybody’s guess. Much of our inflation is entrenched - think the building industry - and many parts of household spending being non-discretionary. The rise in variable reference rates facing borrowers who come off low fixed rates is frightening.

In a monthly column to assist trustees, specialist Meg Heffron explores major issues on managing your SMSF. There has been plenty of media over the last few weeks about the fact that the 'transfer balance cap' will increase to $1.9 million from 1 July 2023. This is the limit on how much anyone can put into a super pension after they retire. It started at $1.6 million in 2017 and increased to $1.7 million in 2021.
