Last season, I coined a phrase: ‘hybrid pressing’. It described a phenomenon that was becoming increasingly popular out of possession (OOP) at the elite level. More and more coaches were wanting the best of both worlds; they wanted the benefits of an aggressive player-to-player (P2P) press high up the pitch along with the benefits of a more conservative zonal structure deeper in the field.
