There's good reason why the concept of a formation has become so popular in football: it gives a simple overview of the players involved, where they play and the team’s general shape. However, formations are quite limited in terms of what they do. Are teams really playing a single static shape throughout an entire game? Are players really just stuck to a single position? And what about the difference in shape when teams are in and out of possession?
