By JON WOODHOUSEFor The Maui NewsThe 44th annual Hawai’i International Film Festival presented by Halekulani is coming to the neighbor islands with screenings at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center from Oct. 19 to 20, followed by the Hale Keaka theater on Lanai from Oct. 21 to 23, and finally, at Kaunakakai Elementary School on Molokai from Nov. 7 to 8. The MACC screenings will include a few Maui premieres.

By JON WOODHOUSEFor The Maui NewsWhen some middle-aged British women decided to tastefully pose nude in 1999, for a benefit calendar to raise money for leukaemia research, it was such a hit, even Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother were presented with copies at Buckingham Palace. The calendar’s success spawned a hit movie, a hit play, and a subsequent musical. Directed by Sally Sefton, “Calendar Girls,” the play, will open on Oct. 11 at MAPA’s Living Room.

By JON WOODHOUSEFor The Maui NewsMaui’s adult hula competition, “Kū Mai Ka Hula” (“Hula Appears”), returns to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater on Saturday, Sept. 14. This 17th annual event will feature male and female dancers performing kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula stylings, with participating hālau attending from throughout the state and the Mainland. “It’s Maui’s premier adult hula competition,” explains Kahulu Maluo-Pearson, Kumu Hula of Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu.
