England sewage spills hit record 3.6m hours last year

Water companies released raw sewage into England's rivers and seas for a record 3.61 million hours last year, a slight increase on 2023. The data released by Environment Agency on Thursday showed that although the number of spills was down each spill lasted longer on average - resulting in a higher total number of hours. Some spilling can be legal, but concern has been mounting amongst scientists about the harm that regular sewage spilling is causing the country's aquatic life.
Number of English bathing sites rated 'poor' doubles

The number of monitored bathing waters in England rated as poor and unfit for swimming has more than doubled, from 18 to 37. More than 400 sites were regularly monitored this summer with 92% of them reaching the minimum standards for bathing, a slight fall from 96% last year. The Environment Agency - which carried out the testing - says those figures are in part due to 27 new sites being monitored this year, of which 18 were rated poor.

The mystery as to why a beluga whale appeared off the coast of Norway wearing a harness may finally have been solved. The tame white whale, which locals named Hvaldimir, made headlines five years ago amidst widespread speculation that it was a Russian spy. Now an expert in the species says she believes the whale did indeed belong to the military and escaped from a naval base in the Arctic Circle. But Dr Olga Shpak does not believe it was a spy.

The proposed laws will apply in England and Wales and give increased powers to regulators to tackle companies who pollute and make it easier for them to be fined. Environment Secretary Steve Reed said the measures would “end the disgraceful behaviour of water companies and their bosses”.
