The brutal murder of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Carmel Gat, Ori Danino, Alex Lubanov, Eden Yerushalmi, and Almog Sarusi by their Hamas captors in the Gaza Strip has increased the sense of urgency in Israel to sign a hostage deal to get the remaining Israeli hostages home safely. However, one point of contention that has served as an impediment for a ceasefire-hostage deal is the status of the Philadelphi Corridor.

This time of year is when Israelis’ and Palestinians’ conflicting memories of the 1948 War may be the most salient. On May 14, Israelis and diaspora Jews like myself celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut, the day the Zionist dream of a Jewish homeland became a reality when Israel won its independence. The following day, on May 15, Palestinians commemorated the Nakba, remembering when hundreds of thousands of them were displaced from their homes as a result of Israel’s War of Independence.

One factor that may be bringing together Israel’s Jewish and Arab citizens is their shared sense of grief. After Hamas’ onslaught on Oct. 7 when they killed at least 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped over 250 people, and in the midst of the devastating war we are currently seeing in the Gaza Strip, many have feared another escalation in violence between Israel’s Jewish and Arab citizens in Israel proper.

If Israel succeeds in dismantling Hamas within the next few months, we will need to not only talk about the ongoing war, but we will also need to talk about what the future holds for the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian population residing there after Hamas is gone. Otherwise, the cycle will only continue.
