Investigative reporting doesn’t always make a measurable impact, and reverberations often come long after stories are published. That wasn’t true for Injustice Watch this year. Our work in 2024 led to a court order granting tenants in eviction court more information about their landlords, prompted a county board hearing into deaths at the Cook County Jail, triggered referrals to state oversight officials for two Cook County judges, and led to more informed participation in judicial elections.

Maybe you’ve had this experience: You get to the bottom of your ballot and see dozens of names you’ve never heard of. They’re the Cook County retention judges. Judges might be the most obscure names on your ballot, but they’re quite possibly the elected official you’re most likely to come into contact with. If you dispute a traffic ticket, face eviction or foreclosure, get a divorce, sue for damages after an accident or are accused of a crime, a Cook County judge is involved.

I began playing baseball when I was fourteen, very late for a sport that most kids start playing in Little League. With zero experience and less than zero athletic ability, I was pretty terrible at first. But I practiced and persevered, getting a lot better and eventually becoming a starter on my high school team. As I struggled on the field, I also struggled with my sexual orientation.

I'm an author, illustrator, and editor who grew up in the Bay Area. My debut graphic novel "Out of Left Field," published by Andrews McMeel in March, is based on my experiences playing baseball as a gay kid in San Francisco. It's a story I've wanted to tell ever since the events that inspired it ended. As early as freshman year of college, I wrote a short story based on my final season of high school baseball.
