AbstractPhoton number distributions of classical and non-classical light sources have been studied extensively, yet their impact on photoemission processes is largely unexplored. In this article, we present measurements of electron number distributions from metal needle tips illuminated with ultrashort light pulses with various photon quantum statistics.

Extended Data Fig. 1 Measurement scheme for heralded of electrons. Electron events triggered from a metal needle tip are energetically separated by an Omega filter. When the energy width of single electron events is smaller than the mean Coulomb energy splitting, the electrons can be separated after the omega filter. Single and two-electron events are then separated in absolute energy.
