And yet, on Wednesday morning, Ioane confirmed that he will be taking a year sabbatical from his duties with the Blues in New Zealand to try on the blue of Leinster for six months. It was particularly surprising given Ioane's history with Leinster legend Johnny Sexton and his frosty history with Ireland.

The rugby world has been left stunned this Wednesday by the out-of-the-blue announcement that Rieko Ioane will join Leinster next season on a six-month deal. All Blacks centre Ioane has exercised his right to a sabattical from Super Rugby side Blues, and will spend part of that year break playing for Leinster, The Blues confirmed on Wednesday morning. Ioane himself took to social media to confirm the news.

Leinster once again stormed to an overly easy Champions Cup last Friday night when they held Glasgow, the best attacking team in the competition, scoreless and booked their place in a European semi-final. The 52-0 win was Leinster's second thrashing in a week, having also handed Premiership Giants Harlequins a 62-0 hammering in Croke Park six days earlier.
