Introduction Land use change is a dominant driver of biodiversity change with often negative effects on ecosystem services (Sala et al. 2000, Hasan et al. 2020, Jaureguiberry et al. 2022). Land use change modifies both the amount of remaining natural habitat as well as its spatial configuration (Fahrig 2003, Fischer and Lindenmayer 2007).

Although disturbance effects on diversity are known to be scale-dependent and taxon-specific, there is little mechanistic understanding of the processes that influence the observed context-dependency.

Two studies in this issue combine theory with existing data on multiple taxonomic groups to understand these relationships. Pigot et al. show that biomass generally increases with species richness because large-bodied species tend to be rare. Liang et al. show that ecosystem stability increases with area because of its relationship with biodiversity.
