Latin American oil and gas producer GeoPark looks to be making moves to defend itself form a hostile takeover after a rival energy firm took a large stake in the company. In a shareholder rights plan announced on Tuesday, Bogotá-based GeoPark adopted a mechanism for rights to become exercisable if an entity or person acquires ownership of 12% or more in the company. The move follows a recent SEC filing by Pampa Energy Inc., which reported a 10.17% holding in GeoPark.

A consortium of oil drillers developing a key pipeline in Argentina is tapping five major banks to finance a $1.7 billion loan for the project, according to people familiar with the matter. Led by Argentina’s state-run driller YPF SA, the group is in talks with Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, Itau Unibanco Holding SA, JP Morgan Chase & Co and Banco Santander SA to finance part of the pipeline’s development, according to people familiar with the matter.

But any optimism for a settlement has long dissipated, more than a year after Milei took office. In his first public comments, the person Burford hired to facilitate talks with the government said he hasn’t had a single meeting with Argentine officials. “There have been no talks for now with the government,” Gerardo Mato said in an interview Thursday at Bloomberg’s offices in Buenos Aires, declining to speculate as to why.
