On the fictional island of Shearwater in Antarctica, time is running out to evacuate a vault of last-of-their-kind seeds. All the researchers are gone, and as rising tides and temperatures threaten the collection, one caretaker family—Dominic Salt and his children, Fen, Raff, and Orly—await the ship that will take them and the seeds to safety. For eligible students though, Phi Theta Kappa, the official honors society of community colleges, offers unique opportunities for those involved. Phi Theta Kappa, or PTK, is one of the few organizations where students are invited based on certain criteria, that being holding a 3.5 GPA and completing 12 credit hours.

Transitioning away from fossil fuels is going to take a lot of metals. Global production of lithium and graphite—essential components of EV batteries—will have to ramp up by 4,000 percent by 2040 to meet the Paris Agreement climate goals. Renewable technologies such as wind turbines and solar panels could not exist without heavy doses of metals we know, like copper, and metals we may have never heard of, like neodymium, promethium, samarium, and europium. To get those metals, we have to mine them.
