The UK economy is going through a very challenging period. As a consequence of the Covid pandemic and then Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, we have seen large increases in energy and food prices, a substantial decline in national income and very elevated inflation. That has all hit households and businesses hard, and – particularly given energy and food prices have been the worst affected – the least well off the hardest.

I, and my colleagues on the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), hear this and a lot more, in our frequent conversations with people on our visits around the UK. On Friday I was in Edinburgh with our Agent, Will Dowson, meeting with a variety of businesses from the creative, retail, housebuilding and telecoms sectors.
