The Jersey J-Cup is an East Coast indie tradition that dates back to the early 2000’s in the original iteration of Jersey Championship Wrestling (which later morphed into the Game Changer Wrestling of today). Back then, tournament winners included the likes of Low-Ki, Super Dragon, and Reckless Youth. Since the JCW brand has been reestablished as a sub-promotion of Game Changer, this is the second edition of the modern Jersey J-Cup.

New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 Climax 33 Night 10 July 30, 2023 Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium Nagoya, Aichi, JapanWatch: NJPW WORLDSo, here we are at Night 10 at the G1 Climax. What can you say? No, really, I’m asking. Do you know anything I can say about this show? Most G1 nights are at least capped off by some kind of anticipated match. A match with some real story or hype behind it. Sure, Goto vs. Tanahashi is a pairing with tons of history, but it’s been ages since it held any real weight.

With all the G1 Climax coverage happening, it’s easy to forget that we are still in King of Gate season. Dragongate’s most prestigious annual tournament continues to chug along, and I’m back with more exhaustive coverage. This middle portion has had some remarkable highs to go along with some middling, long-winded lows. If you’re an old fan, I hope you still like me by the end of this, and if you’re new, cool! Hi! Like the G1, King of Gate is such a great entry point for new fans.

I know that, around this time of year, most of our bandwidth for Japanese pro wrestling tournament watching is consumed by the G1 Climax, but I have to speak up for Dragongate’s annual foray into the tourney space: King of Gate! I love King of Gate, and, to me, a lot of the tournament’s magic comes from the house style of the promotion. Dragongate’s reputation is built on historic multi-man matches marked by its roster’s inhuman speed and precision.

Watch: NJPW World (free!)I love the beginning of G1 season, man. Those first couple shows where anything is possible, our completionist brains haven’t driven insane yet, and we can still think things like “A Shane Haste singles match? Sure, alright!” Before we get started, I know that the G1 Climax is often an entry point for a lot of fans who have been curious about New Japan Pro Wrestling.
