Over the years, I've had a few friends attempt to home-brew a batch of their own mead. It's a fairly easy liquor to make on your own because you're simply mixing honey with water and yeast and then letting it ferment. Mead is sometimes called honey wine or misunderstood to be honey beer, but it's not made from grapes or hops: Honey is the central ingredient, and the sugary heart of any good mead (you can add other stuff, but we'll get into that later).

In theory, wine isn't a complicated drink: It's fermented grape juice, after all. But the idea of actually making your own wine can still feel intimidating, and we surely don't need to tell you that randomly letting grape juice ferment is not an ideal wine-making strategy. That said, if you've recently had your "wine awakening" (and if you're slightly more scrupulous than letting grape juice sit outside), it's worth making homemade wine.

Have you ever used the preset buttons on a microwave? These buttons scattered around the microwave controls don't literally say "preset" on the label — instead, these options claim to cook foods in specific ways, like the buttons simply called "popcorn" or "baked potato" or even just "defrost." You've likely seen these labels on your appliance, and it's entirely possible that you've never once touched them.

When it comes to fried rice, the world is your oyster. We don't mean you can add oyster sauce (although you certainly can, it's very savory), but rather that you can toss in lots of different ingredients like garlic, peas, pineapple, or crispy fried onions (for a crunchier addition to your fried rice). Most proteins are workable, from shrimp to eggs to pork. The rice itself has stricter rules, however.

RT @NewSchoolWrites: LIT #34 is here! 🎉 It's time to celebrate all the incredible authors published in the latest journal, along with the n…

I’m gonna do an earnest post here, but in 2 years of grad school I filled up a 270-page draft, 3 notebooks, and a cap & gown, and it’s a good feeling https://t.co/cmpw00Mwso

Hard to say why, but I think Bitter Sweet Symphony is a much better graduation song than Forever Young
