BRYAN — Bryan senior Landon Bassett suffered a growth-plate fracture in his right arm while pitching when he was 10 years old, preventing the then-youngster to play baseball all summer. So, Bassett decided to give tennis a try. “I just started picking up a tennis racket left-handed and started to swing because I was bored and I needed something to do in the summer,” he said. That need to have something to do was life-changing.

DEFIANCE — Bryan's softball team left six runners on base, including four in scoring position, through four innings against No. 3-seeded St. Marys Memorial, keeping Saturday's Division IV district final scoreless. But when the top-seeded Golden Bears had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning, they cashed in. And that outburst helped Bryan secure its fourth district championship in a row and fourth in program history.

DEFIANCE — Bryan‘s softball team had a lot of pent-up energy entering Thursday’s Division IV district semifinal against Lima Bath. The Golden Bears hadn’t played a game in 13 days, with their last contest on Friday, May 9. And Thursday’s district semifinal was postponed from Tuesday due to rainy weather — and after junior standout Thea Staten threw three walks while having a hard time gripping the ball. That pent-up energy delivered results.

Hilltop softball coach Tom Schaper earned his 250th career win tonight with the Cadets' 20-0 five-inning win over Stryker in a Division VII sectional final in the Bryan District. Schaper now has a career record of 250-97 (243-81 in 12 seasons at Hilltop).

Montpelier junior Bria Friend broke her 100-meter dash record in today's BBC prelims. Friend ran a 12.47 for first, breaking her previous record of 12.54 (2024).
