The other day, Publishers Weekly hosted a few dozen members of the Young Publishers Association at our offices for a drinks and mingling thing. It was a mess outside after having rained all day, but we still had a full house, and, frankly, it was amazing. Here were a bunch of bright and engaged young people who have their entire careers ahead of them. Among them were folks who had moved to New York from all corners of the country, some within the past few months.

To state the obvious: this is a pivotal moment for our democracy. In November, voters will head to the polls and decide what direction we want to take the country in. There could hardly be a starker contrast to the options. On one hand you’ve got... Well, look, there is a good choice and a not good choice if you value things like freedom, choice, integrity, respect, honesty, justice, equality, or the basic notion that the truth matters.

Pedophiles. Porn pushers. Groomers. Menaces. Predators. Champions of woke ideology. Remember when librarians just had reputations for shushing and being stern? Somehow those same public servants who just wanted you to turn it down a little have become purveyors of filth and foot soldiers in the war to brainwash kids and turn them into snowflakes.

Hi there, and welcome to PW’s first-ever issue dedicated to independent bookselling and publishing. When I sat down to write this note, I worried about preaching to the choir. Nobody here needs to be convinced of how vital bookshops are to their communities, or reminded of the culture-shifting role small and independent presses have long had and always will have in society.

Happy New Year! I hope the post-holiday reentry was as painless as possible for everyone. We’re ramping up here at PW for a big year and have a lot of changes on the way, some of which you’ll see in this issue—including the first phase of a revamped news section and a new back page we’re calling Endnotes.
