A study published in the journal Nature suggests childhood exposure to a bacterial toxin is driving the increase in early-onset colorectal cancer. Certain strains of E. coli and other gut bacteria produce a genotoxin called colibactin, which damages the DNA in colon cells. Researchers believe the mutation may increase the risk of developing cancer before the age of 50.

In 2023, 62 million U.S. patients received 93 million CT scans. Radiation from the exams in that year alone could lead to 103,000 future cases of cancer, according to new peer-reviewed estimates published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The use of CT scans has increased 35% since 2007.
