3 1/1 By Jonathan Smith DISCOVER the spoil heaps and other mining remains strewn around the slopes below Pen Hill. Add in a short walk along the high moors with excellent views over Wensleydale, viewed at their best at Penhill Beacon, and it is a fine winter’s walk. This is a walk where I believe the low winter’s light adds to the walk. In the morning in particular the views up Wensleydale with the light behind you are spectacular.

3 1/1 By Jonathan Smith THERE is some of the best and most entertaining coastal walking in the short section between Staithes and Port Mulgrave; it even crosses a trig point with superb views. Return via the woods of Borrowby Dale. Parking is at the top end of the beautiful village of Staithes. However the coastal path is best accessed from the main village and coast. Therefore, drop in to the tightly packed houses and narrow streets of Staithes.

3 1/1 By Jonathan Smith IN the heart of the North York Moors is the popular village of Goathland. Follow the old railway lines to Grosmont before returning via the higher moors making for a circuit of great variety. You could even make use of one of the Santa Specials. Although you can start the walk at Grosmont I prefer Goathland for the dramatic conclusion to the walk as it drops back in to the village.

3 1/1 By Jonathan Smith I ENJOY one-way walks, and the excellent Settle to Carlisle Railway offers many opportunities for these. On this nine-mile walk from Dent Station to Ribblehead there are lovely views of Upper Dentdale, a detour to three viaducts and an ever-changing perspective of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. Being shorter days now it avoids the often dark valley bottoms.

3 1/1 THE walk from Burton Leonard passes through quiet farmland and in to the Mountgarrett Estate. Although only four miles, it can be easily extended to the pretty village of Copgrove, adding another two miles of easy walking. To the east of the A61 between Ripon and Harrogate lies some quiet countryside. On arrival at the pretty village of Burton Leonard it is a little disorientating on how best to explore the area.
