For the ninth time since its beginning in 1987, the Special Olympics Airlift is marshalling hundreds of pilots, owners, and aircraft to, as the company says, “create the world’s largest peacetime airlift” and share the general aviation experience with their passengers. The airlift takes place June 19 and 27.

The 8Flight app, available from the Apple App Store, has new features including a weather layer that uses artificial intelligence to gather and process information from FAA weather cameras, automated weather observing stations, and other sources to shrink the delay in reporting conditions. The object is to get as close to true “real time” weather reporting as possible.

The notice follows a March 24 FAA ruling that a California county’s ban on leaded avgas violated grant assurances. Under Grant Assurance 40 airport owners or operators who made 100-octane low-lead aviation gasoline available at their airports during 2022 may not “restrict or prohibit the sale of or self-fueling with 100-octane low lead aviation gasoline,” the FAA said in its notice. The agency also offered additional details about how the new assurance will work.
