TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) will visit China next month.
The former Kuomintang (KMT) president’s trip was announced by his Ma Ying-jeou Foundation on Monday (March 25), which said that Ma will lead a delegation of students to visit Chinese cultural and historical sites, as well as enterprises, per CNA. Ma was Taiwan's president between 2008 and 2016 and has been a strong advocate of closer cross-strait ties post-presidency.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tens of thousands of fish carcasses were found floating on the surface of a Taichung river on Monday (March 24) in an incident some suspect was caused by a wastewater discharge from an upstream factory, per CNA.
Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Legislator Chiang Ho-shu (江和樹) said the site of thousands of dead fish in the Toubiankeng River is a common sight on Mondays. Chiang said it was suspected that upstream factories were secretly discharging wastewater over the weekend.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A “die-in” protest was held in Taipei on Sunday (March 24) to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the end of a recently established joint Taiwan-Israel parliamentary group.
Protestors laid at the entrance to Liberty Square to show solidarity with the over 30,000 Palestinians who have been killed in Gaza since Oct. 7.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s central bank announced an interest rate increase on Thursday (March 21), defying economists’ expectations.
The central bank announced the decision to increase the interest rate to 2% after its quarterly policy making meeting. CNA reported that central bank governor Yang Chin-long (楊金龍) said the decision may be “a little surprising” but it was the right thing to do.
In a press release, the bank said the global economic outlook is marked by uncertainty.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred on Taiwan’s east coast Thursday (March 21) at just before 7 p.m.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported the quake occurred in Hualien County at a depth of a little over 20 kilometers. The quake could be felt in Taipei and reportedly as far as Japan, according to Google’s earthquake monitoring service, which measures the movement of Android cellphones to provide the data.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s representative office in Tel Aviv has donated US$500,000 (about NT$15.9 million) to local government agencies in Israel.
The Federation of Local Authorities in Israel posted a message of thanks to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Tel Aviv for the donation on Thursday (March 14). Taiwan’s representative office replied with a post that said it was glad a partnership had begun, and that it looked forward to more exchanges soon.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kuomintang (KMT) Vice Chair Andrew Hsia (夏立言) has returned to Taiwan from a seven-day visit to China, which he said was focused on meeting Taiwanese people rather than Chinese officials.
Hsia returned on Tuesday (March 19) following a trip that took him to Chongqing, Chengdu, Jinan, Qingdao, and other locations, per CNA.
