IntroductionThe NPLD[1] (or Credit Servicers Directive, as it is also known) is an EU Directive due to be implemented by EU Member States by the end of 2023 intended to encourage the development of a secondary market in non-performing loans (NPLs)—primarily to help European banks get such loans off their balance sheet. The European Commission is also expected to adopt secondary legislation during the course of 2023 setting out technical standards on various elements of the new regime.
