When Leicester City were last relegated, it was easier to make a fresh start. Manager Dean Smith and his staff were only on a deal until the end of the season, and so it was simple to let them go. Seven senior players were out of contract too, and there were a few obvious departures like James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, players that City did not have to tout around to get big fees for.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s three toughest selection calls for Leicester City’s meeting with Liverpool are all in his back-line. The City manager reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation last time out, and it helped earn them their first point since January as they twice came back to draw 2-2 with Brighton. It is expected that that system will be retained even against champions-elect Liverpool and their wealth of attacking talent. But there are questions over which four players make up the back-line.

Ruud van Nistelrooy knows what he wants the future of Leicester City to look like but says he’s still waiting for the club to show they’re on the same page. With six games to go this season, and with City on the brink of the drop, van Nistelrooy is starting to look to next term and “shaping the future” with his team selection. Trent Alexander-Arnold could make his return from injury against Leicester City, but only as a substitute. The Liverpool right-back has missed the title favourites’ last three Premier League matches, as well as the Carabao Cup final, with an ankle injury. But he’s back in team training ahead of Liverpool’s trip to the King Power Stadium. It’s a match where City could go down and Liverpool could win the title.

RT @_joshhollandd: No Jake Evans or Olabade Aluko for Leicester City U21s this evening. Both have trained with the first-team. Jeremy Mong…

Van Nistelrooy, having said on Thursday he had no intention of running away from the job, did not offer the same commitment when pushed on his immediate future tonight. #LCFC https://t.co/neQGOodneI

#LCFC have been so desperately poor of late that despite how bad that was, it was still better than Weds. Dreadful defensive organisation and concentration, plus poor play on the ball, but at least they tried to score. Ricardo good. Monga showed intent. https://t.co/wCtNyPPUv7
