1 INTRODUCTION The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has been linked to increases in anti-Asian sentiments in online discourse (e.g., Nguyen et al., 2020), news reports (e.g., Tavernise & Jr, 2020), and in academic research (Dhanani & Franz, 2020; Hahm et al., 2021; Lantz et al., 2023; Reny & Barreto, 2020). Perhaps the virus's origin in China, along with political rhetoric calling COVID-19 “the China virus”, was enough to provoke anti-Chinese sentiment in the US (Darling-Hammond et al., 2020).
