US consumer confidence rebounded sharply in May from an almost five-year low as perceptions of the economy and labor market improved as the Trump administration backed down from more extreme tariffs and tariff threats. The Conference Board’s gauge of confidence increased by 12.3 points to 98, marking the biggest monthly gain in four years. The figure exceeded all estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists.

US President Donald Trump’s signature tax bill passed the 435-member House of Representatives on Thursday morning by one vote. The sprawling, multitrillion-dollar package proposed by Republicans, which would (among many other things) slash funding for safety net programs in favor of extending tax cuts, is projected to add trillions of dollars to America’s almost $37 trillion national debt. The bill now heads to the Senate, which like the House is also narrowly controlled by the GOP.

Elon Musk, who funneled much of almost $300 million in recent political donations to Donald Trump’s re-election effort, said on Tuesday he would significantly pull back from political spending. “I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” Musk said during an interview at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha. “I think I’ve done enough.”However, in the same discussion with Bloomberg’s Mishal Husain, Musk left open the possibility that his money could flow again.
