Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas are the two players who stand out as favourites for the PGA Championship when you look solely at course history at Quail Hollow. It is hard to look past Rory McIlroy for the PGA Championship. Many expect the Northern Irishman to play with so much freedom now that he has won The Masters. He has that fifth major and has completed the career grand slam.

It has been another mixed start to the season for Rickie Fowler this year, with the 36-year-old’s best result of the year coming at the Truist Championship this past week. Of course, the last few years have been extremely turbulent for Rickie Fowler. He has had one PGA Tour win in the last six years, while 2024 marked the first time since 2019 that he had played in all four majors in the same year. Fowler looked to be destined for several major titles when he came onto the scene.

Jordan Spieth is just one player you can never count out heading into the major championships, regardless of the form he is in during the weeks prior. On paper, Jordan Spieth has little right to be considered a favourite for the PGA Championship this week. And yet, because of what Spieth is capable of, it would be foolish to discount him at Quail Hollow.

Xander Schauffele is set to go into the PGA Championship as the somewhat forgotten man, with many of his rivals in great form heading to Quail Hollow. It has been a remarkable 12 months for Xander Schauffele. He emerged from last year’s Wells Fargo Championship with questions being asked about his ability to get across the line after being beaten by Rory McIlroy at Quail Hollow. However, those doubts would be put to bed in emphatic fashion.

Perhaps it is recency bias, but it is difficult to remember the last time an outsider appeared to have such a small chance of winning a major, with so many of the biggest names in the game in fine form heading into this year’s PGA Championship. All of the heavyweights appear to be playing brilliantly right now. Rory McIlroy won The Masters last month, while Scottie Scheffler was absolutely outstanding at The CJ CUP Byron Nelson as he won by eight.
