England’s next game in the tournament is against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Lahore. Some MPs and human rights groups say the team should boycott the match because of the Taliban’s clampdown on women’s rights, which has seen the Afghan women’s cricket team forced into exile. Despite international cricket rules saying men’s test teams must also have a women’s team, cricketing authorities here have rejected calls to boycott the game, even as they acknowledge Afghanistan’s ‘gender apartheid’.

His journey took him through war zones and along the way he endured serious illness, several weeks in jail and – after reaching Europe – daily racist abuse. But he said other experiences restored his faith in humanity.
