On January 3, Goldendale Teen SOYO, a local branch of the Orthodox Christian youth organization, hosted its regular themed youth dance at the Goldendale Grange Hall, marking the debut of Susie Phelps as the event’s new host. The event, an extension of Goldendale Teen SOYO’s mission of community outreach, drew a diverse group of participants, with a focus on teenagers, all dressed in pirate-themed attire. The evening featured traditional folk dances and opportunities for fellowship.

On January 13, the Mid-Columbia Children’s Council (MCCC) held a meeting to address concerns surrounding the temporary closure of its Goldendale site. The closure followed two incidents involving prescription medication found in the classroom, including a December 20 incident where a 16-month-old child bit into a capsule and was hospitalized. A second incident on January 9, where additional medication was found in the classroom, prompted the site’s suspension of operations.

“After the devastating fire, we rise above,” said Kristi Krall, owner of Wild Huckleberry Coffee, about their new drink, Rise of the Phoenix. The name is a fitting tribute to the journey she and her team undertook after losing their previous venue, Cafe Genevieve’s, to a fire. Kristeen Large, the former owner of Cafe Genevieve’s, and Krall, its former manager, described their bond as “close friends who became sisters” and were determined not to give up.

The Goldendale Pregnancy Resource Center has undergone great changes in the past year. The centerpiece of these developments was the immensely successful fundraising campaign to support the purchase of a new facility of operations on 122 W. Main Street. The process was further supported by a strong volunteer base, which helped not only fund the project but also assisted in labor to relocate operations to the new building, including moving and renovations.
