How do you justify porting a 4X strategy game to VR and mixed reality? Unfortunately, Civilization VII VR doesn’t offer any convincing answers. The eminence of this legendarily moreish series demands its appearance on all platforms with each new release, but the game’s existence in headset world is a strange novelty — and having played it, I'm not sure who it’s for.

I wasn’t expecting to play forty hours of an indie game in less than five days, but then I got a review code for Blue Prince. This game, whose name is a double entendre, is about designing your way through a mysterious estate on a rigid 5 x 9 grid, one room at a time.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct just dropped, and along with it a brand new From Software game, which is exclusive to the console and launching in 2026. Naturally, everybody thought that it was Bloodborne 2, but the truth is stranger still. The Duskbloods is an 8-player PvPvE experience with “online multiplayer at its core.” So, imagine Escape from Tarkov directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Don’t believe me? I don’t blame you, but it’s all there on the company website.

Real-time strategy fans will no doubt be familiar with the iconic Age of Empires series, where players tackle historical campaigns by managing resources and waging wars. The latest mainline entry, Age of Empires 4, is the first in 15 years and has been developed by Relic Entertainment and World’s Edge, with publishing support from Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios. After being announced in 2017, it was finally released on October 28th 2021.
