The message from the developers that arrived alongside my code for Doom: The Dark Ages made it very clear — this prequel to the reboot series was designed to stand alone from its hectic predecessors — and provide a new experience for fans “inspired by classic Doom”. In that sense, I’d say id Software has succeeded, but the result is going to be quite divisive.

How do you justify porting a 4X strategy game to VR and mixed reality? Unfortunately, Civilization VII VR doesn’t offer any convincing answers. The eminence of this legendarily moreish series demands its appearance on all platforms with each new release, but the game’s existence in headset world is a strange novelty — and having played it, I'm not sure who it’s for.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct just dropped, and along with it a brand new From Software game, which is exclusive to the console and launching in 2026. Naturally, everybody thought that it was Bloodborne 2, but the truth is stranger still. I don’t blame you, but it’s all there on the company website.

Real-time strategy fans will no doubt be familiar with the iconic Age of Empires series, where players tackle historical campaigns by managing resources and waging wars. The latest mainline entry, Age of Empires 4, is the first in 15 years and has been developed by Relic Entertainment and World’s Edge, with publishing support from Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios. After being announced in 2017, it was finally released on October 28th 2021.

I reviewed Doom: The Dark Ages. The intensity has been scaled back and the narrative has been ramped up, but not in a good way. It's a mixed bag, but ripping and tearing is still plenty of fun! https://t.co/3HA7YI06iz
