    WESTFIELD, Mass.  –  Lou Conte, Jr. will be the next head coach of the Westfield State University football team, athletics director Richard Lenfest, Jr. announced today. Conte, who served as head coach at American International College in Springfield, Mass., last season, will take about a 15-minute drive west to lead the Owls program.

    HUNTSVILLE — Behind a defensive stand that held off UTEP to six points in the final five minutes, Sam Houston grabbed the win to remain at the top of Conference USA. Sam Houston snuck out a 60-56 win over the Miners to stay locked at the top with Louisiana Tech for the top spot in the conference. “Going into the game I knew that we were going to play the best pressure team in the country,” Sam Houston head coach Chris Mudge said.

    HUNTSVILLE — In what was the highest-attended game, and most electric atmosphere of the season for Sam Houston, the Bearkats took a big victory at home against their former coach. In Jason Hooten’s return, Sam Houston knocked off the Aggies 79-67 to claim the No. 1 spot in Conference USA. Bearkats Head Coach Chris Mudge was hoisted in the air postgame by senior forward Souleymane Doumbia during the fight song as the Kats were in high spirits after the win.

    HUNTSVILLE — In an I-45 matchup, Huntsville girls’ basketball welcomed Madisonville to town in a Friday night matchup. In a physical back-and-forth game, the Lady Hornets took care of business with a 53-49 victory over the Lady Mustangs on Huntsville’s senior night. It was a special night at Huntsville High School as the team celebrated the four seniors on the roster. Those seniors are guard/forward Markia Sweat, guard Ma’Halia Twine, guard A’quarius Howard and forward Chelsea Butler.

    Sam Houston squeaked out a victory against ULM 63-62 Tuesday night at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville. The Bearkats, despite their largest lead of the ball game totaling three points, made the comeback late in the second half thanks to key mistakes and fouls from the Warhawks to give Sam Houston plenty of opportunities and possessions. Bearkats Head Coach Chris Mudge, seemingly catching his breath after the exciting end, put some blame on himself for the close finish.
