After a rainy and gloomy start to the day on Wednesday, but the sunshine came out for the afternoon to bring temperatures into the low 70s for many. Late into the evening, we may see a little bit of lingering smoke and haze stick around into Thursday morning. This may limit air quality for some during this time. Otherwise, it will remain partly cloudy with temperatures dropping back to the mid-50s tonight.

Sunday afternoon marked the first time since last Sunday where Rockford reached at or above 70°. That 6-day streak marks the longest stretch of sub-70 degree weather this late in the season since June of 2001!It will be an almost copy and paste weather day heading into Memorial Day, another good day to spend time outside. The morning will start out a little cool, but sunshine will bring us near the 70-degree mark for afternoon highs.

It was a cloudier day in the Stateline than Friday was, but temperatures were still able to reach the upper 60s and near 70° for some. A weak weather system will pass to our South tonight, bringing an isolated sprinkle chance after midnight. The highest coverage of any rain would be mostly South of I-88 with slightly more favorable moisture. Much of the rain shown here will not quite make it to the surface, given a dry slot of air a few thousand feet up.

Saturday looks favorable across a broad region, with continued influence from high pressure in the Midwest and Great Lakes. A few spotty showers will be possible across Iowa toward the late evening. Higher coverage of rain will arrive Saturday night into Sunday morning with a passing wave.

We have been running a rainfall deficit all spring, as the Rockford airport is now short by about 2″ since March 1st. The latest drought monitor from the National Drought Mitigation Center shows much of the region now within a Moderate Drought, a little bit of an expansion from last week’s outlook. This data is prior to Tuesday’s rainfall of over an inch, so there may be some improvements for next week, but we remain in a dry pattern ahead.
