    Autonomous trucking company Plus AI’s DC point person is “cautiously optimistic” that the federal government will soon establish a national regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles. “The prior administration, my group of folks, we were working to establish a set of guardrails,” Earl Adams Jr., former deputy administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and now the VP of public policy and regulatory affairs for Plus, said at a June 3 roundtable in Detroit.

    May brought a milestone to the world of autonomous trucking: Aurora Innovation started delivering loads to customers via fully driverless trucks on highways in Texas. The Pittsburgh-based company said in a news release that it was the first to operate a commercial service of this kind on public roads, and previewed plans to expand its service to El Paso and Phoenix later this year.

    That’s according to findings from the auto section of KPMG’s annual American Perspectives survey. Based on responses from 2,500 adults across the country, the survey suggested an “increasing preference for standard gas-powered vehicles.” Asked about their preference between internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, and EVs with the same price tags, 42% picked gas-powered cars—up from 38% last year. At the same time, interest in EVs fell from 21% in 2024 to 16% in 2025.
