INTRODUCTION The aquatic monocotyledonous duckweeds (Lemnaceae Martinov) comprise five genera with so far 35 species and two hybrid species (Bog et al., 2019; Appenroth et al., 2024). Despite their small size and reduced morphology, duckweeds are remarkably diverse and their genetic, physiological and biochemical features, their development, evolution, and practical applications are of increasing interest (for review see Acosta et al., 2021; Cao et al., 2018; Fourounjian et al., 2020).
